PzKpfw Neubaufahrzeug V

Designed in 1934 to complete the family of standardized tanks (Pz I-IV) the Panzer Neubaufahrzeug ("Newly Built Vehicle") was aimed at becoming Germany's heavy tank design. Built to similar lines as the British Vickers "Independent" tank, Soviet T-35 or the French Char-2C, it had many opponents. By the late thirties it was clear that the idea of a land battleship concept was slowly dying. The Pz Nbfz V was also expensive and slow to produce and was not fast enough to keep up with the fast moving lighter panzer forces. However Germany still required a breakthrough tank and this was the only viable design at the time be produced. It was produced at a slow rate and was paired up with Pz IV support tanks in the Heavy Panzer Zug. Early war experiences determined that it did not have enough armor as a heavy tank and lacked firepower to take on other heavy adversaries. The Ausf C improved its armor somewhat and the addition of 105mm gun improved its anti-fortification and vehicle capabilities, although it still performed insignificantly, and was mixed with the newly produced Pz B1s and Pz AMX-42 to improve the overall performance of the heavy tank platoon. The steadily increasing tide of armor building against the German tank forces caused the last incarnation of the design to feature greatly increased anti-tank capabilities, with the addition of a light laser for light marksman duties as well as target designation for the immensely powerfull Kwk42 gun, later featured in the Pz V Panther. By 1943 the production lines were turned over towards the new superior Panther and Tiger tanks, relegating the Pz Nbfz V to the role of heavy tank in the newly raised Volks Panzer battalions. There the Ausf C and E versions served adequately, although cannibalization for parts and combat losses steadily declined its numbers and by 1945 it was a vary rare sight amongst Volkspanzer units.
